When Dreams Come True free for Kindle

Hi everyone

I hope you are enjoying the festive season so far.

I have made When Dreams Come True free for Kindle, so if you know anyone who may enjoy it, please do let them know.

Charlie is happiest when biking with Max and Toby, or watching films with Allie. But when Charlie reaches year nine (age 13), everything begins to change.

As her friends develop new interests, Charlie's dreams become more frequent and vivid, and a family crisis tears her away from her friends.

How will Charlie react when old family secrets are revealed? Will her life change completely when some of her dreams start to come true?

Free for Kindle (via Amazon) until 29 December 2013

A New Blog Post, At Last! And a Special Feature.

Hi everyone

I can't believe I have left my blog untouched for three whole months - the amount of tumbleweed that's built up is horrendous. I seem to constantly be getting busier with work and my family and everything really... but I will be sure to not leave it so long between blogs again.

Throughout this month of April, I have been part of a "Special Feature" over on the wonderful  b00kr3vi3ws blog. Being featured for this means there are five posts during one month and it's been very exciting to read the posts so far.

I've borrowed the banner below from b00kr3vi3ws as I think it looks gorgeous:

There is a giveaway of some copies of my books over on this blog, so please do pop over and say hello.

Thanks, as always, for reading.

Seasonal Greetings and a Small Gift From Me

It was around this time last year I did a review of my year but this year has been a bit different for personal reasons, so during the second part of 2012 I haven't written anything at all. I'm now looking forward to the New Year and keen to get on with writing my third novel for children which has been brewing for quite some time now. It will be great to escape into the world of adventure and mystery for a change.

If you celebrate Christmas, have a wonderful time, if not, enjoy the lights and the atmosphere anyway and have a wonderful new year. As a small gift, I have made my books When Dreams Come True and A Knowing Look and Other Stories free for Kindle until Christmas Eve.

Also, over on my Facebook page I am about to start a giveaway of a paperback copy of Deck The Halls (which contains my new sci fi story Twenty Five) to celebrate going over 700 likes (thank you to everyone who likes my page xx) so head over there if you want to be in the hat for that.

Best wishes to all of you for 2013 and thanks, as always, for reading.

Thanks and Event News

I would just like to say a massive thank you to everyone who helped make Monday's launch of When Dreams Come True so much fun by blogging, tweeting, re-tweeting, joining the event on Facebook and/or Goodreads, and sharing on FB... and even purchasing the book. It was wonderful to see so many people getting involved.

Sarah Franklin, Caroline Smailes & Ben Johncock
I am absolutely sure that I haven't made it around to thank everyone personally yet and I am also sorry this post didn't go up yesterday, but it was one of those busy days... you know the kind. Mainly dominated by yet another emergency dental appointment but luckily rounded off by a lovely event in Oxford, Short Stories Aloud, a fantastic evening with actors reading short stories. The actors (Steve Hay and Julie Mayhew) were amazing and the chance to do a Q&A session with authors Caroline Smailes and Ben Johncock afterwards was great. There was also cake. Need I say more?

Thanks for reading, and please do come back tomorrow where I will be taking part in the launch of 100 RPM. Yay!

A Wonderful Writing Week

I have said it before that my virtual friends mean a lot to me. I have got to know so many lovely people online, my only worry now is not being able to keep up with everyone all the time due to the lack of hours in the day.

This week really brought home to me how much some of these friendships mean, and I wanted to share it, because I feel incredibly lucky.

Gorgeous books
First of all I have been sent two books in the mail. Voices of Angels is an anthology, which includes a story by my good friend Alison Wells. She wrote such a lovely inscription in the book too. I will treasure that, and I'm looking forward to reading her story and those by other writers I admire greatly.

Lies Love Tells by Gina Dickerson is a book I already have on Kindle but although my Kindle is growing on me, I remain a fan of the paperback. Doesn't it look gorgeous! I'm so looking forward to reading it.

I recently won a book on Goodreads by a writer I had not heard of at the time, Stephanie Abbott. I looked at some of the reviews of the book before my copy arrived and I saw someone had written a couple of unrealistic references to England "jerked them out of the story". As a writer, this irritated me, because if it was my book I would have wanted to know what those things were and change them. So I offered to read through the book and give the author some pointers. Luckily she took this offer in the spirit it was intended, and so began a partnership which led to a second edition. Yesterday I was delighted to see two Kindle gifts in my inbox and when I looked at the second edition of the book I orginally read, I saw this acknowledgments page (right). (I took this on my iPod Touch as the picture is clearer than a shot of my Kindle). Thanks, Stephanie!

I have also been receiving emails about review copies I've sent out of When Dreams Come True. This is my 'make or break' book when it comes to writing. I hadn't realised quite how important it was to me for people to like it until I received the first 3 or 4 emails from people and so far all of the feedback has been really positive. There have been tears, but all of them happy ones. So thank you to Rachel Lyndhurst , Tyler-Rose (The Reading Pile) and Cheryl Casey.

What a wonderful week!!!

Thanks for reading xx

Lucky Seven: When Dreams Come True

I was was tagged by Tom Gillespie for a Lucky Seven Excerpt.

The rules are simple:
1. Go to page 77 in your current manuscript
2. Go to line 7
3. Copy down the next seven lines as they are – no cheating
4. Tag 7 other authors (Done on Facebook)

So, this is my extract from When Dreams Come True, which is due for release this summer.

"While I sit and drift off into my imagination, my phone buzzes again.
It's Allie: Bumped into Jack. He asked if we wanted 2 meet him at the cinema later today.
My pulse quickens instantly. I feel a bit sick actually.
What did u say? I reply.
I said ur away, & he asked if I want 2 go anyway. You don’t mind do u?"

So what do you think? Will our protagonist mind? Tricky question, eh?

When Dreams Come True: Almost There!

Hi everyone,

It's been a long time since my last blog post, sorry about that! Things have been a bit off key in the real world where I have sprained my ankle, and as a result I haven't been at my desk so much in the past week.

On the writing side, I made a vow to not use social media so much until I finished my final edit for When Dreams Come True.  I'm pleased to say I finished it yesterday, so now there's just proof reading and tweaks to make and I'm on schedule to release the book in the next couple of months.

I have set up a Goodreads Giveaway for an ARC of the book, as well as for my other two books but I'm sorry to say they are all UK only for this batch.

Meanwhile... on with the proofreading!

Thanks for reading,

The Internet as a Tool for Writers

In the past week or so I have been thinking about cover designs for When Dreams Come True and after hours of trawling through stock photography sites I had three photographs, one of which I loved, one I didn't like much at all and one I found was growing on me.  I asked some of my friends for their thoughts, which they duly gave. These friends are all people who I have got to know online.

The photo that I loved had some issues with it. The girl in the photo Is My Character. You know, when you look at a face and think, YES!

But I don't ask for feedback from people who I respect the opinion of for nothing. Some of them had issues with the emotions shown in the image.

I did something I felt really cheeky doing yesterday. I emailed the photographer - who lives in the USA, to see if she had any more shots from the photo shoot with a slightly different expression. Her reply pretty much took my breath away.

In summary, while I was sleeping last night, the photographer did a reshoot with the same model, using my exact requests as guidelines. I now have 26 images to choose from, which is a task in itself, as they are all totally gorgeous.

I can't help but think about how hard it must have been back in the time when Dickens was writing. He had to get on a boat to go to the US and travel around doing readings to speak to people.

These days we are so blessed with the Internet. Not only was I conversing with a photographer in another country yesterday, I was also giving advice to a new book blogger in the US, emailing a friend in yet another country about our writing goals and progress, and having email exchanges with several other writers in the UK. These things would have been impossible before the Internet. Sometimes I wonder if we realise just how lucky we are.

Thanks for reading - this post makes my blog title seem quite apt don't you think?

What I've Been Doing Lately

Hi everyone

Well I've been a bit quiet here on my blog recently, not really saying much about what I've been working on, so thought I'd write a little update today.

The reason I've been a bit quiet is on my launch day for New Beginnings, I sat in front of my computer for 16 hours straight and STILL didn't feel like I'd done enough to share links and thank people. Please do visit my pages called 'interviews' and 'guest blogs' as I have updated them to show the blogs that were published on the day. After that long day, it has taken me a while to get back into the swing of being on my computer again!

I have received some lovely emails from people who bought the book on the day, some of which have really stuck with me. It means so much to be told that my words have had an impact on somebody.

I have been working on my second novel, When Dreams Come True. My beta readers were very enthusiastic about it, and I have spent the last six months sending it off to publishers and agents. The response has been a selection of form rejections and hand-written complimentary "nearly but not quite" notes, but the overall scenario is I am now gearing up to self publish the book. It has been edited and I am now sending it to some readers in the right age group to see what they think of it. I also have a proof reader and cover designer waiting in the wings so hopefully this book will be available by the summer. I've even set it up on Goodreads so you can follow the updates on there if you so wish.

I've started writing my third book for children, which is a traditional adventure story for younger readers, age 6-9. It's based on a place I've actually been to - I knew as soon as I clapped eyes on it that I would end up writing an adventure story about it. I will be going back there soon to absorb the atmosphere again and take some photos.

I currently have some stories (for adults) going through the submission process for some womens' magazines so please keep your fingers crossed. One of them has been out for nearly 4 months so I imagine I will hear about that one before too long.

I have got some exciting events coming up this year. I am going to a school reading festival in September which is at the school I used to go to. That will be great fun for many reasons, but not least because I can have a snoop around and see what has changed there. I am also very excited about National Flash Fiction Day (May 16th) which will be a lot of fun. You can see my writer profile for this here.

I have definitely written far too much enough now!

Thank you so much for reading,

Radio, Magazines and an extract from When Dreams Come True

Hi everyone

I have been away for a couple of days but I wanted to share a couple of things that happened yesterday. First of all, I was catching up on reading my copies of Writers' Forum magazine, which I subscribe to but rarely have time to read at home. I started on the June issue (I was on a sun lounger near a jacuzzi, if I need to set the scene!) and I came to an article about Writing Competitions by the lovely Sally Quilford. I had to read a certain paragraph three times before it sunk it, as Sally quoted me in it. It was ironic really, as about five minutes earlier, I was thinking 'wow it must be so amazing to see your name in this magazine'.

I then took myself off to find a part of the spa which had wifi (believe me they are limited) to send hubby a note about this. As soon as the wifi connected I received an email from him saying Radio Oxford had been in contact to invite me onto another show this morning (to discuss 'Back To School' shopping!). I had to decline as my children are all here and it's lucky I did really as just at the time I would have been on, they started scrapping with each other in a "right you're back, we want your attention" sort of way. But it was lovely to be asked.

While I was away I received some lovely reviews for New Beginnings on Amazon, which made my day on Sunday. Thank you to lovely Talli and Anne.

And finally, I have added a new page to my blog today. It's an extract from my second book, When Dreams Come True. I'd love to know what you think; feel free to let me know by commenting on this post or via the "contact" form.

Thanks for reading xx

Writer/Mum Part 2 - One Year On

On 1 August last year, I wrote a post called A Day In The Life of a Writer/Mum which was basically a bit rant about how difficult it is to write during the school holidays. This post has been one of the most visited posts on this blog, so I am guessing people can relate!

This year, I decided early on that things had to be different. I didn't want to feel that frustration again, the dreadful resentment of the lack of writing time, and especially the guilt for not spending more time enjoying the time I have with my children.

I told myself this year would be different. And it has been.

A lot has changed since last summer. I've been published several times, for a start, and New Beginnings is making me very proud at the moment as the sales and reviews keep on coming. I am so grateful to everyone who has bought a copy and also to the lovely people who have left reviews on Amazon and Goodreads about the book. This really does help so thank you very much.

I finished and self-edited my second novel, When Dreams Come True well in advance of the school summer break this year. That is the main thing that is different this year, my timings have all been brought forward. It feels wonderful. Instead of wondering about piles of edits, I am spending the odd bit of time I do have on promotion and social networking. It's lovely to catch up with my friends and it's amazing to see the results of my marketing efforts. I am enjoying this part of the process greatly.

As for the writing? It's on hold. The ideas are there, they're gently simmering away, but I won't be writing them out until the school term starts.

And now? I'm off to play some games with my children.

Have a great summer xx
